Question about sources for math proofs

[edit]

There is a page (here) that contains several statements without a source, I believe the reason is because the supposed proof is found in a dedicated fandom (formerly wikia). Even though it is not a good source, I think it is necessary to add this item as a reference, because as it stands now, it is just a statement without any source, it would not make more sense to add the reference so, in case someone wants to check and point out errors/corrections, than just leaving it there as a statement? This topic would attract more attention at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Mathematics. fgnievinski (talk) 14:50, 1 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: it's not clear what changes you want to be made. Please mention the specific changes in a "change X to Y" format and provide a reliable source if appropriate. Cannolis (talk) 03:20, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Portal removal

[edit]

Removal of template portal mathematics from most mathematics articles has been proposed at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Mathematics#Portals. fgnievinski (talk) 15:43, 1 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The discussion doesn't seem to have reached a consensus. I could redesign the portal in the style of Portal:Biography? See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Portals#A cleaner layout for portals. Guilherme Burn (talk) 21:32, 7 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It would still be a waste of space on most of our mathematics articles and should not be added. I think redesigning it is also a waste of editor time and effort. —David Eppstein (talk) 21:13, 15 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The portal feature seems different than the usual. Rather, it shows three images outside the box instead of the introduction one. What happened? Am I the only one with the problematic feature, or is it common for the rest of the editors? Dedhert.Jr (talk) 02:00, 16 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with the other comments. The portal is not useful. Even in redesigned form, nobody would really care about it. PatrickR2 (talk) 04:59, 16 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
To me, one of the most lovely and specifically unique part of the portals is that they have two boxes in which you can shift any random pages of high-class articles by clicking the horizontal arrows. But if the discussion is talking about the public thing, yeah, nobody would really care about it. Dedhert.Jr (talk) 14:37, 16 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I assume this conversation is about the template Template:Mathematics portal page? Imo, it is hard to justify having that template on random articles about math. Surely this should not be on literally every math article. And if you think it should be on some, I find it hard to decide which it should be on. In general, it doesn't seem super useful for readers to see this template. Anyway, the portal itself seems to get an ok number of views, and I see no reason for an interested editor to not improve it. Mathwriter2718 (talk) 12:43, 16 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@David Eppstein and PatrickR2: I agree with the comments, but these problems are inherent to all portals (WP:PWP, WP:DexPor). WikiProject Mathematics could look for a consensus to remove this portal in MFD or remove the incoming links from the pages, but I find it difficult since the portals still have many enthusiasts. What I propose with this new layout is simplicity, avoiding wasting the time of readers and editors. @Dedhert.Jr: This is an idea from [1] suggestions are welcome.Guilherme Burn (talk) 12:55, 16 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I would say, in my opinion, that your concern is to attract many readers by featuring those three images. What makes me triggered to comment about the layout is that it wastes the right blank huge white space on the screen, unless you can add something to cover the blank. Maybe someone has a better idea, but oh well, nobody supports it. Dedhert.Jr (talk) 14:29, 16 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Please remove Matpat from the game hyperlink. It seems that a hyperlink accidentally redirected to game theory (the youtuber) instead of game theory (the field of math).2A04:7F80:10FA:5400:8856:1357:D51F:8991 (talk) 09:37, 1 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for pointing this out. It seems that this edit by CheeseyHead (talk · contribs) left a number of articles with incorrect links. I've fixed about 50. If you see any others, please post either here or at my talk page. -- John of Reading (talk) 10:41, 1 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry about that. CheeseyHead (talk) 02:04, 2 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
